the path to wholehearted seeing
NEW! May 15th - June 30th
e-Course + Mentoring: $350 SIGN UP
e-Course only: $175 (regular registration opens on May 2nd)
This six-week e-course is designed to inspire photographers to develop a stronger, more nuanced personal vision. Over the course of the class, we'll shake up our seeing, toss patterns out the window, and invite a fresh new vision to emerge. We'll explore what it takes to create poetic, magical, transcendent images filled to bursting with heart and soul.
It's easy to make ordinary, lackluster images - and it's possible to spend many years making images that fall short of expectations. What is it that sets apart photographers with strong personal vision? How are they seeing the world differently? How can artists up the ante on their work in a meaningful way? We'll dig into this juicy territory as we take strides to shake loose constraints, expand conceptual horizons, and find styles that inspire new creative expression.
Light Atlas is a transformational six-week experience that will set the stage for a more wholehearted, nourishing photographic practice. If you're craving more meaning, originality, and mastery in your work, this course is for you. It's time to pick up your camera and throw caution to the wind! Wonderful images await.
Special note: Light Atlas is designed as a complement to Candela: Finding Inspiration Through Photography, though the courses may be taken in any order.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INCLUDE?
Light Atlas includes inspirational readings, audio slideshows, lectures, interviews with visionary photographers, and weekly photography projects designed to expand creative boundaries. The course is highly interactive. You'll be cheered on and supported every day by Laura and the lively community of fellow students. It's such a fun way to learn and grow as an artist.
If you choose the mentoring option when you register, the course will also include a phone/Skype call with Laura and a review of your past photographic work, your website (if you happen to have one), or any portfolios or extra images you'd like to share. Mentoring is a nice opportunity to chat about personal goals and challenges and to map out next steps with more guidance and support. Mentorship sessions are jam packed with ideas, detailed feedback, and actionable, personalized advice.
WHAT IS THE EXPERIENCE LIKE?
Light Atlas is designed to fit easily into your busy schedule. Three days a week, you'll get a healthy dose of photo inspiration in your inbox. Unlike a traditional classroom experience, Light Atlas lessons can be taken at any hour of the day or night, whenever it suits you best. You can take the course at 3am in your pajamas, if you like! You can always repeat a lesson if you need to, and there is no such thing as falling behind. You'll have access to all the lessons for at least a year after the course ends. The online classroom is also a great, safe space for posting comments and receiving feedback on images and ideas. Laura will be your guide throughout the course, supporting you with encouraging feedback and advice.
WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO I NEED?
All cameras are welcome! You don’t need anything fancy to take this course. In fact, the simpler, the better! DSLRs, point-and-shoots, camera phones, pinhole cameras – there is a strict equipment nondiscrimination policy. Film shooters must be able to scan images to share in the online classroom.
HOW GOOD DO I NEED TO BE?
Since this is a conceptual photography course (as opposed to a technical class), thoughtful photographers at any level may join. Students should be comfortable with basic camera operations, and must know how to upload images to their computers. We’re here to learn – if you feel you have something to learn about the creative
process, you’re in the right spot.
